Tribute to the Legend: Rishi Kapoor’s Top 10 Films

This ageless entertainer has given us loads of very enjoyable musical romances to watch in leisure for forever ,and a day.

Here’s looking at Rishi Kapoor’s 10 Best Films.

Mera Naam Joker(1969)—This is where Rishi Kapoor’s astounding journey as a star-actor began. Playing an adolescent who has a serious crush on his school-teacher Simi Garewal Rishi, at 14, won his first National award. Looking at his performance , under father Raj Kapoor’s direction, even today you feel he got the confusions of sexual awakening  in his character dead right.

Bobby(1973)—From here onwards Rishi’s struggle to make his presence felt in heroine-oriented film began.Whether it was Bobby or Barood , the directors focused on the heroine while Rishi made his presence felt as best as he could. While Dimple Kapdia played the author-backed role Rishi was amazing in his confidence level while portraying the rich introverted neglected child of irresponsible parents..

Rafoo Chakkar(1975)—Delightful  in drag Rishi simply stole the show with Paintal playing his farcical foil. And yes, wife Neetu Singh was around too.Narendra Bedidirected this enjoyable desi version of Some Like It Hot. Amazingly decades later Paintal son Hiten Paintal played Rishi’s son Ranbir’s pal in Bachna AeHaseenon. But the chemistry was not the same.

Laila Majnu(1976)—One of Rishi’s greatest performances. As the legendary lover he absolutely lived the pain agony and suffering of the character in the sand dunes of Rajasthan . H S Rawail directed this film. Madan Mohan songs like Barbaad-e-mohabbat ki dua saath liye jaa were put across by Rishi with intense passion. Simply breathtaking.

Amar Akbar Anthony(1977):  Playing Akbar in the film where Amitabh Bachchan’s Anthony clearly had an edge, Rishi’s Qawwallis Parda hai parda and Taiyyab alipyar ka dushman stole the show. No matter how brief his role Rishi always has fun with it.

Sargam(1979)—Armed with a dafli and oozing a rustic charm as a love-smitten villager who wants nothing but to see the object of his adoration(Jaya Prada) happy, Rishi  re-defined the do-gooder hero’s space in Hindi cinema by making the character believable and vulnerable. Another very accomplished performance.

Karz(1980)—The ultimate rockstar act in the fulsome musical by Subhash Ghai…No one could take to the dancefloor the way Rishi Kapoor did. Not even his very talented son. In this film on  the theme of reincarnation Rishi took sweet revenge on his schoolteacher from Mera Naam Joker Simi Garewal .

Prem Rog(1982)—Another heroine-centric film where director Raj Kapoor focused entirely on young widow Padmini Kohapure’s plight. And yet as her silent supporter and sympathizer Rishi excelled far beyond the script. Watch his expressions during the song Yeh pyar ttha ya kuch aur ttha during Padmini’s marriage. You’d know why many consider Rishi the best actor of the Kapoor clan.

Ek Chadar Maili Si(1986)—One of Rishi’s most underrated performances, here he was cast as Triloka a rustic Punjabi youngster forced to marry his Bhabhi HemaMalini who is 10 years his senior.Adapted from litterateur Rajinder Singh Bedi’s short story this bold film was  memorable for giving Rishi a chance to explore something beyond his usual rom-com space.Sukhwant Dhadda directed.Wonder what happened to him!

Khoj(1989)—At a time when he played lover-boy roles Rishi took a grand risk with this role of a man who murders his own wife. But shhhh! We don’t know that until the end. And as we all know, ‘The End’ is a long way off from Rishi Kapoor’s exceptional career.

    3 Neglected Amitabh Bachchan Starrers

We all swear by his swagger  in  Zanjeer,  Deewaar, Amar  Akbar Anthony and  Satte Pe Satta.  But if you want to see  Amitabh Bachchan’s finest  performances  try these.

    1.     Bemisaal(1982): Based on a Samresh Basu novel Bemisal is the story of curiously cynical do-gooder. The Big B plays Sudhir, a delinquent orphan taken in by a kind government officer(Om Shivpuri) who brings up Sudhir and his own biological son Prashant(Vinod Mehra) as equals.Later, much later, on his deathbed after a sudden heart attack he tells his Bahu Kavita(Raakhee), “My son is weak. But whenever you’re in a crisis you can blindly depend on Sudhir.”Prophetic words, those. As the exceptionally eventful plot moves forward we see how slyly Sudhir keeps stepping in to bail out his benefactor’s son. But here’s what makes Bemisal a unique and refreshing tale of sacrifice and self-annihilation. The sacrifices made by Sudhir are never apparent until much later when the passage of time shows the true enormity of how much Sudhir gives away to the friend whose father gave him back a childhood that would have otherwise been squandered on the streets.

There is a message on adoption in Bemisal. Om Shivpuri says, “I was advised, ‘Get a dog. Never bring a street-child home.’ I didn’t listen to anyone. It was the best decision of my life.”As played by Bachchan  Sudhir emerges as a smirking enigma. Not just misunderstood by those who love him, but he also quite enjoys being perceived as being quite the opposite of what he really is. The role of the closet-martyr is done by Bachchan with exceeding intelligence and sensitivity. We are never allowed to feel sorry for this noble sacrificing soul. The Big B never glorifies his character’s generosity of spirit. He bleeds internally. He cries silent tears. He gives and he gives. Because that’s the only way he lives.

Most unique is the relationship that forms between Sudhir and his friend Prashant’s wife Kavita. He calls her ‘Sakhi’ throughout the film and flirts outrageously with her in front of her husband and even her father-in-law. He tells her his deepest secrets including those about his secret flings. Finally when he goes to jail and, in the film’s most memorable sequence, she comes visiting him in his favourite white saree with a red border, Sudhir lets Kavita, and us, have a peep into that fortified heart of his.

    2.     Shakti(1982):  Though Sholay continues to be Ramesh Sippy’s signature work it is to many of his admirers an inferior work to Shakti which he made 7 years after Sholay became a landmark and benchmark  for successive generations of Indian filmmakers .But sorry, Shakti ,it is for me. And it’s not just about the historic union of the mighty Dilip Kumar with his greatest successor Amitabh Bachchan. It’s a lot more. The sheer velocity of the screenplay, the structuring of the father-son conflict, the deeply contoured sketching and execution of the characters as they hurl towards an amazing nemesis, simply make Shakti the most powerful script that the awesome twosome Salim-Javed ever wrote. This is  a far superior screenplay to the duo’s other celebrated Bachchan films including Zanjeer and Deewaar. This was one of Dilip Kumar’s last really great performance. Like the rest of the humanity from the entertainment industry, the Big B and director Ramesh Sippy were in awe of the mighty Dilip Kumar. But they never allowed their reverence to come in the way of keeping the plot and characterizations balanced. The father-son conflict never gets tilted.

    3.     Saudagar(1973):  This is  the most  morally bankrupt  character Mr B has ever played. Moti is  a  man so lowdown and  dirty he marries a graceful widow(the mythic Nutan)  uses her  for business purposes and then dumps her to marry his  shallow sexed-up sweetheart(Padma Khanna). Playing a toddy extractor, the Big B  actually got into a dhoti and climbed the palm tree. I’ve  never seen his transformation into a character  being so complete in  any other  film.Directed  by Sudhendu  Roy Saudagar deserves  to be rediscovered . It is  a certifiable classic.

5 Best Bollywood Musicals Movies Of All Times

Okay,  we all know songs have always been an  intrinsic part of Hindi cinema. Our  actors sing when they are happy, sing when they are sad…there’s a song for every occasion. But what about those films where the songs and music take the  story forward?  Here are 5 Best Bollywood Musicals Movies Of All Times where songs were  not a conceit  but  a necessity.

    1.     Abhimaan(1973)Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s film  about a  husband who won’t allow his more talented wife to go forward  in her life and career , was actually based on Kishore Kumar and  his first wife Ruma Guha Thakurta. How do I know? Because  Hrishida himself  told me.  Music in Abhimaan was the soul, and Lata Mangeshkar the  voice of  the film. Naturally! Hrishida adored Lataji. He  once  told she  never charged a  single penny for  songs in his  films. Jaya Bhaduri who  played  the singer-wife studied  Lataji’s  recordings and copied her style. Sachin Dev Burman’s songs Piya bina  piiya bina,  Ab toh hai tumse har khushi apni, Nadia  kinare hiraye aye kangana,  Tere mere Milan ki yeh raina  were  gems . This is a  musical  with perfect  music.

    2.     Anurodh(1976):  One of  the  less acknowledged  fruits  of  the famous  Rajesh  Khanna-Shakti Samanta collaborations, Anurodh had Khanna playing a singer. It featured some brilliant Laxmikant-Pyarelal compositions  sung by Kishore  Kumar  like Jab dard nahin ttha  seene mein,Aate  jate khubsoorat  awaara  sadkon  mein,  Aapke anurodh pe …Samanta and Khanna  always worked with composer R D Burman. They made an exception for this musical, an underrated  melodious marvel of  a movie.Rajesh Khanna  had a temporary fall-out with RD, hence the  musical replacement. But the  music did  not suffer in the  absence of Rajesh Khanna’s permanent muse.

    3.     Heer Ranjha(1970):  Chetan Anand’s legendary  love tale  was woven  around the  songs and  music written by the great Kaifi Azmi and composed by Madan Mohan. Every line that the  lovers Raj Kumar and Priya Rajvansh spoke was poetry penned  by Kaifi Saab. And  Madan Mohan  came up with the score  of his  lifetime: Milo na tum toh hum ghabraye, Do dil toote, Yeh duniya yeh mehfil,  Meri duniya mein tum aaye  and of course the  mother of all bidaai songs Doli chad de. Can’t get  any better than this.

    4.     Rock On(2008): A  game changer for Bollywood musicals. The  first Hindi  film about a rock band featuring Arjun Rampal,Purab Kohli,Luke Kenny and  Farhan Akhtar, The film gave us Farhan  the actor and the singer. The songs  composed  by  Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy were  functional in a very professional kind of way. This is the  kind of modern poetry(Javed Akhtar) that we expected these characters to sing.Farhan’s singing  voice provides  an interesting counterpoint to the velvety  playback singers who came  before.

    5.     Aashiqui  2(2013): The last ‘great’ Bollywood musical.Well okay, not so great a re-telling  of  the  Star Is Born tale  of  two singers who come  together  through their shared passion for music  and  fall apart  because of  it. Aditya  Roy Kapur and Shradha  Kapoor were passably impressive. But the film’s  intense intentions were manifested  in the songs composed by Mithoon, Jeet Ganguly and Amit Trivedi. Mithoon’s  Tum hi ho and  Amit Trivedi’s Sun raha hai stand  out.

Guess Which Is The Most Successful Marriage In Bollywood?

There are  two kinds  of  showbiz celebrity couples: the ones who pretend to be  faithful  to one another,  and  the  ones who are actually faithful. Admittedly the  numbers  for  the  former  category far exceed  the latter.

I can tell you about  these seemingly perfect marriages where the  husbands  have been cheating  till the cows come home.

I don’t know whether  I should share  this. But  very recently this  high-profile  power-couple  , both superstars in their own right, faced rough weather in their seemingly  perfect marriage when the  Hyper Male was  seen giving too much attention to  a female co-star.  What did his superstar-patni do? She  showered attention on a hunky male superstar slurping on him as though he were a slice of yummy melting  chocolate  cake. Husband hastily abandoned his flirty ways.

There are  high-profile marriages out there which could crumble under the weight of all  the pretension that they have put up with.

Not Abhishek and Aishwarya.  This is  a couple  for keeps. And those who tell you otherwise know nothing  about  these two people. Both had their share of relationships before marriage.  But when they  decided to come together as Man and Wife, they   promised  each other  to  make their marriage work  , no matter what  it takes.

When  they worked together for  the  first time in Rohan Sippy’s  Kuch Na Kaho there were no  romantic vibes between  them. They actually fell in   love much later when they co-starred  in J P Dutta’s Umrao Jaan. That’s where  ‘It’  happened and everyone could see it.

I remember my dear friend  JP  smiling  like an indulgent father. “I think my bachcha has fallen in  love.”

How do you know? I asked.

“They don’t come for their  shots when called. We  all have to wait patiently  for them to make an appearance and then we all  have to pretend as  if everything is normal. We are better actors than those two,” said JP.

It’s been  13  years since  Abhishek and Aishwarya have been together and  there is not a whiff of  a scandal.Every time I  meet them in Mumbai  I insist  on  meeting them  together  . It takes some  co-ordination . But they do it for me.Because as a  couple  and as individuals Abhishek and Aishwarya are gracious souls, always  attentive and  considerate.

What’s more , they complement one  another  perfectly. To take an example, Aishwarya, as everyone  who knows her will tell you,  is terrible with communication. If  you get a reply from her, you must  treasure  it for  eternity.  Very rarely does she respond. Abhishek, on the  other hand, has  learnt  the art  of communication from his parents who are really good, make that  exceptional, at  it . On  my birthdays , it is generally Abhishek who calls and  then passes  on  the phone to  his wife.

Not that she  lacks  in warmth.  It’s just that her communication skills need  working on.  As does any marriage. The couple has  its share  of  problems, like  every  other couple. But they  know how to work their way around   the bumpy patches in their marriage.

I once asked Abhishek the secret of his  successful marriage.

“Every  night without fail before you sleep say ‘Sorry’ three times  to your wife.”

    Looks it is working.
